Our Dreadlock Extensions
At Hippie Cowgirl Dreads, we specialize in high-quality synthetic dreadlock extensions. We are committed to both the customer experience and the integrity of our products, which is why we exclusively use Henlon hair for our standard dreadlocks, braids and twists. Unlike most synthetic options made with Kanekalon fiber—which contains a chemical coating that may cause scalp irritation—Henlon hair is free of chemical coatings. Recognized as the highest-quality synthetic fiber, Henlon closely mirrors the look and feel of natural human hair, providing a comfortable, realistic, and lasting result. However, we do use Kanekalon fiber for our Brushable Waves and Wavy Dreadlocks. If you are sensitive to the chemical coating, please keep that in mind when ordering.
Our extensions are crafted using a signature twisted method, setting us apart from the standard crocheted techniques or wool alternatives. This refined approach creates locks that are smooth to the touch, flexible in movement, and exceptionally comfortable to wear. Designed with care, our method ensures a natural feel that’s gentle on the scalp and free from the irritation often caused by traditional options.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How many packs will I need for my whole head?
A: 9-12 packs! Depending on how thin or thick your natural hair is. If you have really thick hair, definitely go with 12 packs. Thin hair, 9 packs. Somewhere in between? Go with 10-11 packs. If you have fine or really thin hair, we suggest Skinny Dreadlocks, instead of Standard.
Q: How long can I keep them in my hair?
A: 4-8 weeks at a time! Keep an eye on your dreadlocks, they'll tell you when it's time to take them out and do a new install. Once they're loose enough to fit a finger through, you'll want to take them out.
Q: Can I reuse them?
A: Yes! Your dreadlocks will last a lifetime. You can keep reusing them over and over.
Q: Will dreadlock extensions damage my hair?
A: They shouldn't. Dreadlock extensions are a protective hairstyle and if worn, installed, and cared for properly, they should only make your hair healthier.
Q: Can I wash them?
A: Yes, wash your dreadlocks as you would normally wash your hair. You can use any shampoo, just skip the conditioner (it can cause build up).
Q: How do I maintain/care for them?
A: The good news is there is almost no maintenance when it comes to our dreadlocks! All you have to do is separate them once a day. I just run my fingers through mine every morning, and I like to use a conditioning oil on my scalp to prevent dryness. That's it! But, if you have wavy dreadlocks, there is a little bit more work you'll have to do. You'll need to separate them daily WITH oil, one by one to keep them nice and neat. These wavy dreadlocks do mature rather quickly though, so they're only fragile for the first few weeks. If you have Brushable Waves, you can keep them brushed or let them do their thing. They'll permanently dread themselves into place if you leave them be.
Q: How do you install them? Can I do it myself?
A: They just braid into your hair. You can install them yourself as long as you know how to braid, or have anyone who knows how to braid help.
Q: How do you braid them in?
A: We have a few install tutorials that you can find on any of our social media accounts if you'd like to check those out! Our extensions are double ended, so you'll fold the dreadlock in half, and choose a side to braid down. That side of the dreadlock will be the third strand to a basic three strand braid. It does take a little bit of practice, but is fairly easy to do once you get the hang of it.
Q: Can I request a custom order?
A: Yes! Send us a message or email and we can talk about what you're looking for. We only make certain styles, but we do offer custom color blends and we're always willing to talk and see if what you're looking for is something we're willing to make.
Q: How long is your order processing time?
A: Our order processing time does change periodically depending on how busy we are, but it's always listed at the top of the website under our menu bar, so keep an eye on that to stay up to date!
Q: Do I have to wear a silk bonnet to bed?
A: Only if you want to. I personally don't, but it will help to prevent frizziness.
